I first want to start out by saying thank you to all those who are currently involved in student clubs and extracurricular activities! Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated by the people you help, both internally here at Redeemer and in the surrounding Hamilton community. As for the rest of you … just kidding! Seriously though.

Annuit Coeptis. "The Lord has favoured us!" This is the conviction of His Majesty’s Christian School in Asmankese, Ghana. Found in the Eastern region of Ghana, His Majesty’s Christian School has been created and built to serve and educate the people of Ghana so that they have the opportunity of education through the Christian lens. Along with EduDeo, the school has been founded by Redeemer’s very own, Dr. Mary Ashun and her husband.

Recent testing from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and third-part firm EXP Consulting confirms that a large area surrounding the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is in fact toxic. As early as this summer, authorities were tipped-off to the potential danger of a chemical compound known as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) present in the Welland River and Binbrook Conservation Area. The pollutants were believed to be contaminating wildlife, killing fish, and making people sick throughout the region.

A series of policy changes affecting student conduct at Redeemer have been given the green light at a recent meeting of the President’s Council in late November. The changes, which focus largely on disciplinary procedures and protocol, were conceived by the Student Life Department and will be printed in next year’s Student Handbook.

It is finished. All of the early mornings, late nights, stacks of marking, long hours at school, creating engaging activities- it all ended on Friday December 9, 2011 at about 3:20 pm.

What an experience! Many of us were blessed to have been placed with teachers who were very supportive, and willing to share and generous with resources.

My favourite animal of all time has to be the squirrel.  It has taken me a while to pin point why I like the squirrel over some of my other favourite animals such as deer, wolverines, and beavers; but I now feel confident enough to express why this is and how this came to be.

Movember is a month which fuels male pride and competition while raising awareness for prostate cancer.

According to Men’s Health Australia, the idea for Movember originated in 2004 by co-founders Luke Slattery, Travis Garone, Adam Garone and Justin Coghlan who now run the Movember non-profit organization. The men state that Movember will “continue to work to change established habits and attitudes and make men aware of the health risks they face, thereby increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.”

I’ve often felt that Remembrance Day services at Redeemer do a good job of acknowledging the evils of war and their impact on civilians but do a very poor job of thanking the valiant men and women who have fought for our freedoms. I know that for most of the Reformed students and staff at Redeemer, their families have only been in this country for one or two generations, many arriving after the end of the Second World War.

Pending final approval in two weeks, a number of important disciplinary changes have been added to the Redeemer Student Handbook. These changes, which will be affective in September of 2012, touch on everything from drugs to sexual assault. Redeemer’s Dean of Students Karen Cornies was involved in the revision process from start to finish. “There were a number of proposed changes to the handbook that reflect our updated policies,” comments Cornies. The only change that has met pre-approval so far is the disciplinary action regarding alcohol.

Plan lesson... eat... sleep... teach... breathe... repeat. Waking up in the middle of the night with an idea for a lesson the next day is now a reality for most of us education students, which, along with many other "teacher moments" have given us the opportunity to experience what it really means to eat, sleep, and breathe school.

On Monday October 24, Redeemer hosted the 24th annual "New Horizons 2011: a Day at Redeemer for the Young at Heart," formerly known as Seniors' Day. Originally this was a day for students to allow their grandparents to see a glimpse into what campus life is like, but with time it has broadened to the greater senior community. The event was sold out, as over 230 seniors filed into the academic building to embark on a day of learning.

With each new academic year, new faces are always a welcome sight for students and faculty alike. This year, Redeemer welcomes a host of new professors who come from a variety of different backgrounds and academic disciplines. All together there are eight newly appointed professors, four of which are brand new to the university. “I’m very pleased,” said Dr. Jacob Ellens, Redeemer’s Vice-President Academic. “We had a rigorous interview process for each of these professors and they did very well.

What better way to share the unique and diverse experience of the students at Redeemer, than to invite those closest to them to share in it? On Friday, October 14, the brothers and sisters of present students gathered on campus to experience a weekend of life at university. Wide-eyed and expectant, the visitors accompanied their siblings on a campus tour, as they were shown the ropes, introduced to friends, and made feel as though they truly belonged here.

If all of us promise to turn our backs and talk amongst ourselves we might be able to convince our shy new dome to rise.  Barring any unforeseeable hurricanes or heavy rain the soccer complex should be inflated Friday morning.

Have you noticed groups of students walking down the hall, pulling out their hair and stressed already about their semester? Tables full of students in the cafeteria talking about their assignment due the next class? Do you see line-ups of glossy eyed students scrambling to get some java at Williams and get back to their long two hour classes about how to teach fractions? You are seeing the education students of the 2012 graduating class. Their class schedules are condensed into two months.

There is nothing quite as gratifying as a homecoming. That moment of stepping out into a crowded audience, looking out into the faces of the students who now occupy your old stomping ground. This was true for Redeemer alumni Josh Vanderlaan, drummer of The City Harmonic, as he and his band graced our stage on Thursday, September 15. The presence of God was so evident in the auditorium as the boys lead a passionate and raw night of worship.

Dearest First Years,
My name is Aaron and I would like to specially welcome all first years to Redeemer.   I would be surprised if you have heard my name because I am neither staff nor faculty, RA nor Senator.  You most likely have never met me and I may never get to meet you.  Thus marks the beginning of a peculiar relationship that we may share.
