On Friday, December 3rd, 2010, Rubi Garyfalakis premiers her first art exhibit at Redeemer’s art gallery. The exhibit, Rubi’s final art class project, is themed around Psalm 56. Each piece portrays a person and a bottle in a different way to suggest different elements from the psalm. She uses blue to reflect sadness and uses red to display anger. The colours contrast to imply the emotions of the figure within the frame. They are illustrated differently to highlight that not all sadnesses are the same.

In our Western culture, Christmas has become more about commercialism and over-indulgence than a celebration of Jesus’ birth. It is time for a change.

The Poetry reading Thursday, November 25th was worth it for the small numbers who came out to listen to Ken Babstock’s latest collection of poetry, Airstream Land Yacht. He also read some poems from the manuscript of his yet-to-be-released collection Methodist Hatchet. I was pretty excited for the reading, being the quintessential English nerd. Admittedly, poetry is not everyone’s thing, and not everyone can be bothered with it, I know.

The Crown would like to extend a warm welcome to Redeemer’s first journalism professor, Casey Korstanje.  Casey comes to us from the Hamilton Spectator where he currently works as Senior Wire Editor for Canada and World news.  As the recipient of the B’nai Brith National Human Rights Award for Journalism, and with experience ranging from journalist to editor, he carries a unique perspective on the news-publishing world.

Being at a school just shy of one thousand students, it does not take much for news to travel around Redeemer. Such topics of interest to the student body include events, new students, and, most importantly, relationships.

As many of you are well aware, November has become a month of male pride as men compete in No-shave-ember, that is, the refusal to shave for a month and with the successful result of turning off the entire female population.

On Thursday, November 11th, Pepsi launched a scholarship opportunity worth up to $5000 for College and University students on its Pepsi Refresh Project Facebook page. This project consists of uploading photos onto the facebook page which reflect what matters to the student. During this contest, students are able to campaign their cause and attempt to garner votes through the page.

On Saturday November 6th, President Dr. Hubert Krygsman was officially inaugurated as Redeemer’s third president.

The evening began in the school’s beautifully decorated gym, where drapes were hung and tables were dressed with white tablecloths and decorated with red roses as the centrepieces. At 7:30pm, everyone was invited to the inauguration which began with an organ and trumpet duet as staff members entered the auditorium.

When I was younger, I read a lot of pioneer novels. I grew up on Sarah Plain and Tall and stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder. One of my favourite parts of these stories was their descriptions of winter.

Recently I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Bob Goudzwaard, Professor Emeritus of Economics and Social Philosophy at the Free University of Amsterdam and a former member of Dutch parliament. Dr. Goudzwaard just completed a month-long CLEAR lecture series entitled Philosophy, Christian Spirituality and Modern Society.

Your book is called “Hope in Troubled Times.” Do you really think that there is hope for this troubled time? Is there something that we can do?

On Sunday, September 26th, Student Senate held what was supposed to be a four-hour meeting. It turned into an eight-hour meeting that caused all the Senators not only to give up their entire day of rest but also to miss evening worship.

If anyone is familiar with James Street's art crawls, you must have heard about the Supercrawl
which recently took place. The crawl lasted from 1pm-11pm, with after-parties lasting well into the morning
hours. On Saturday, September 25th, I had the privilege of attending the Supercrawl and exploring some
of Hamilton’s finest art.

Thanksgiving is a time of year where family gatherings take place and indulging in too much turkey
is standard. I have always anticipated time with my family, but this year, thankfulness came into play
more.

Are you a poor student? If you go to Redeemer, then your answer is more than likely yes. Thankfully, we live in an area where there are plenty of places to “go Dutch” and to enjoy what Hamilton has to offer without burning holes in our wallets.

Today, women’s ideas about love are highly influenced by media, social pressure, and false ideals.

First of all, women are so easily victim to love because it is what we need. Love is confusing. Love is passionate. It is heart-breaking, exciting, and intense. There are so many emotions which stem from love that is impossible to find one specific idea of how it works. As women, we desire to find romantic love; however, after being influenced by media stereotypes it is hard to create an idea of what God actually intends for us in relationships.

Surely you have noticed hipsters roaming at every indie concert, art party, and American apparel shop. But even as hipsters try to convey their uniqueness and philosophical ideals, they have trapped themselves in a trend which sadly lacks such qualities and substance.

You belong here! You must have seen Redeemer’s new slogan around campus, welcoming all of us back. I have to admit I felt some excitement at someone acknowledging my place here. It feels good to belong, to have my right place.

With the overwhelming amount of first years enrolled this year, students were mixed in with second year dorms to accommodate everyone.

Redeemer’s dedication to on-campus living was challenged this fall as an unanticipated increase in enrollment, particularly among first-years, made it necessary for administration to develop creative ways to house the many students wishing to live on campus. Administration was surprised as applications for on-campus housing continued to arrive well into the summer.
