This weekend happens to be one of the most epic weekends of the year, when men of all ages become unreachable. After twenty weeks of NFL, it comes down to one game: the New England Patriots and the New York Giants. The New England Patriots are looking for their fourth Super Bowl in the last twelve years.

Started in 2010 by Steve Stone and Rachael Loney, the Rugby Club has been growing in popularity ever since. The club leaders, who have past experience with the sport, began teaching others the fundamentals and organizing pickup games on campus. “It’s been surprisingly difficult to build the team from the ground up, specifically because of the nature of the sport,” says head coach and co-founder Rachael Loney.

While most of us were at home spending time with family or sleeping in over the break, the men’s volleyball team was busy training and competing on the west coast of California. The trip ran about a week, from December 28 to January 4, and was centred around a tournament hosted by the San Diego Volleyball Club.

Though Volleyball and Basketball tend to dominate the sports scene at Redeemer, one of the unsung heroes of our Athletics' department is the Badminton team. Featuring a wide range of skilled players, Redeemer's Badminton team has come from humble beginnings, but is rising in the Ontario university sports scene.

The season continues as Redeemer Royals basketball teams try to earn for themselves a top spot in the OCAA standings. The Royals are coming off of a poor 2010-2011 season but are proving to compete this year as points are starting to roll in.

London England, home of the Royal family, Big Ben, Wimbledon, Buckingham Palace, the London Bridge and the 2012 Summer Olympics. As Canadians continue to live in the afterglow of the incredible 2010 Winter Olympics, we look forward to the next challenge as a field of athletes look to bring home the gold once again. Canadian talent looks as good as ever and our national team will be looking to beat our 18 medals (including 3 gold) we achieved in the 2008 summer Olympics.

It was time, the moment Royal’s volleyball teams had been waiting for the entire semester. The home opener was finally here and victory could be nearly tasted in the cool November air. The Redeemer Royals were fired up and ready to hit the court against the Fanshawe Falcons.

Right from the first practice it was clear that the Royals were about to produce a cross country team that would be a source of strong competition in the OCAA for the 2011 cross country season. With the new additions it was clear to the team that if ever Redeemer would be in contention for medals, this was the year.

As the Autumn winds blow through our school grounds spreading woolen sweaters and flu germs, it also carries with it a fever of a different sort; basketball fever. With four games for each of the Royals teams under their belts, the season is shaping up to be one of change, but also trial and tribulation. The men have won a quarter of the games, with the majority of them being at home and drawing large crowds; the team certainly can't find fault in Royal loving. The women are off to a shakier start, currently sitting on a 0-4.

Is this the year? Are the playoffs in the Leafs' very near future? Are the Leafs going to win the Cup? These are all questions being asked by Leaf fans, some more realistic than others. Yet many hockey fans, not just from Toronto, are wondering if this year’s edition of the Leafs is the real deal. Let’s take a look at why the Leafs are having success this year. (All stats as of November 11, 2011.)

Men’s Basketball Shows Significant Potential

The Royals men’s basketball team looks primed and ready to go this season and set to show the OCAA that they can compete toe-to-toe with the best teams in the league. The 2011-2012 NHL season has begun and Canadians are ecstatic as we watch our nation field another hockey team this year. Winnipeg citizens went crazy in May 2011 as rumours and negotiations were confirmed, and their long lost team was resurrected from what seemed to be death. True North Sports & Entertainment is responsible for the frenzy as the Canadian based company purchased the Jets for a whopping $170 million.

Hockey has had its fair share of items to debate over the past few years. Things such as fighting, head checks, cheap shots and Sean Avery are continually discussed amongst fans, managers and owners alike. The truth remains, monkey see, monkey do. What children see on Hockey Night in Canada is what children do in their own leagues. Minor hockey in Ontario especially, has noticed the increase in violence in their leagues.

Redeemer athletes can breathe a sigh of relief as more than 8, 000 college support staff are expected to return to work on September 20, 2011. The Royals' athletic opening day was postponed as OCAA teams were unable to play. Despite the setback, Redeemer is now in the process of gearing up the various varsity teams for the games ahead.
Fear hung in the air as entire seasons could have been cancelled for teams such as varsity soccer and cross country.

I had to call my mother a few weeks ago. After the usual banter between mother and son, I brought up the topic of dodgeball. At first my mother thought I was joking: after all, is there really such a sport as dodgeball? In a serious tone of voice, I told her of Redeemer’s recent exploits in extramural dodgeball. I explained the thrill of the game, and how I have come to love the sport.
Last year, dodgeball was an intramural sport at Redeemer. It was thought of as any other intramural game: the goal was to have fun in a relaxed atmosphere. It wasn’t super fancy.

Oh when the reds most definitely. Any time I hear this song I instantly fill in the next lines. Come marching in. And they did, in hordes. These Reds that I am talking about were not the athletes, but the fans. For although we, as athletes, did march into the championships, it was nothing compared to the way our supporters showed up. Every game we played we saw an increasing number of familiar faces and red shirts in the crowd.
