Feature Creatures of Redeemer - Budsy

Rebekka Gondosch | Reporter

Don’t let the spikes fool you! Budsy is a cuddly creature and delighted to be this month’s Pet of the Month! Budsy is companion species to Emily Lorimer and had a few words to share about himself for our February issue.

Are there are misconceptions/myths about hedgehogs that you would like to debunk for our readers?

Many people believe that hedgehogs are vicious and harmful creatures. But if you spend time to get to know them, they are very friendly and loveable! Hedgehogs are only prickly when they roll up into a ball; when they’re relaxed, you can stroke their quills without poking yourself.

How old are you, and what pearls of wisdom have you acquired over the years?

I’m two and a half years old! If there's one thing I’ve learned, it’s to be careful when coming close to edges! Countertops will end suddenly if you don’t watch out, and humans aren’t always reliable when holding you. The rush from falling isn’t always worth it!

What is one thing you do that makes humans laugh?

I snort to say hello and crawl into their pockets to keep warm!

If you were to write a memoir, what would be the title?

Definitely "My Life in a Ball".

Feature Creatures of Redeemer - Gucci

Rebekka Gondosch | Reporter

Time to horse around with the pet of the month, Gucci! This perfect pony is companion to Rebekah Clark and was interviewed for our January issue of the Crown.

How long have you known Rebekah and how did you two meet?

I have known Rebekah for six years; we met on her twelfth birthday.

Have you participated in any competitions and won any awards?

Rebekah and I traveled and competed all around North America, and our most prized award was the Justin Rookie of the year award where we were ranked 2nd in North America!

What is one thing about you that people might find a little strange?

An odd fact about me is that I enjoy eating grapes and oranges, which is peculiar for my species.

What is your favourite pun featuring horses?

“I can’t talk right now, I’m a little horse!”

Q: How do you like to greet humans when you first meet them?

Kenya: When I first meet humans I usually like to check them out like I check out other dogs, and that obviously involves sniffing certain places.  I'm not sure why, but my owner always seems to get embarrassed when I do that and tries to pull me away!

Q: Winter is coming! Do you have any favourite activities planned for the winter season?

Kenya: Oh yes, I love winter.  My family always has lots of fires outside and I love to hang out with them around the fire pit. Of course I don't get to play in a lot of snow, because I live in BC. Also, in the winter my owner comes home from school and I'll do anything with him while he's home! I'm pretty much down for anything.

Q: What’s a treat you go crazy for?

Kenya: I love popcorn.  I'm not too picky and I’ll take what I can get, but I think I've been putting on a few extra pounds. Obviously I'm just getting ready for winter… right?

Q: Is there anything you do that your human just doesn't seem to understand?

Kenya: Whenever my owner is going to take me somewhere in his car, I jump into the driver seat. How is it fair he gets to drive all the time? He doesn't understand and hasn't given me a chance to drive. He's missing out.

Feature Creatures of Redeemer - Sookie & Oscar

Rebekka Gondosch | Reporter

This month’s feature creatures are reporter Rebekka Gondosch’s two companion species: Sookie and Oscar. Sookie is a flame point Himalayan rescue cat from Stratford’s SPCA and Oscar is a Shaded Silver Persian rescue cat from Toronto’s Annex Cat Rescue. These two stunning species were interviewed about being selected for The Crown’s first ever “Pet of the Month”.

What was your reaction to receiving this distinguished recognition?

Sookie: It is hardly my first award and certainly won’t be my last.

Oscar: I have nothing to declare except my genius.

How do you enjoy spending your leisure time?

Sookie: Between ordering my human around and flaunting my snaggle tooth, I have little time for leisure. Although lately I have taken to parkouring across my human’s new apartment.

Oscar: I am partial to the literary classics. I use them as a comfortable cushions to sleep on.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Sookie: Commanding the human race.

Oscar: Continuing to pray that my sister cat does not eat me in my sleep. And becoming a shark. A very fluffy shark.

Feature Creatures of Redeemer - Herb

Rebekka Gondosch | Reporter

The Crown is pleased to introduce our newest featured furball: Herb! ‘Herbie is proud puppy to final year B.Ed student Magda Brzoska and was ecstatic to be interviewed for this month’s column.

What is something that drives you crazy?

Herb: When my human expects me to do tricks and all this fancy stuff without a treat! I’ve decided to go on strike until I get a reward. After all, I don’t do this stuff for fun; time is money, humans! Well, in this case, time is treats…

What would you like to dress up as for Halloween this year?

Well, since I’m super cute I think I’ll go au naturale. I get treats all year round like this so…why not stick with a good thing?

Do you have any words of wisdom to share with your fellow species?

Use your guilt face always. For example, if you want to play with toilet paper (for some reason the humans HATE when we do this) drag the toilet paper from the washroom all the way down the hallway or take it to their room. Make sure you take all the toilet paper you can get. When they catch you, just remember to use the guilt face. It works every time to avoid any human groans or grumbles!
