In late December of 2011, Ontario’s McGuinty government announced the introduction of the Ontario Tuition Grant. The OTG intended to reduce the financial stress on the province’s undergraduate population and was designed to cover 30% of the average tuition paid by Ontario students. This is great news for undergraduate students in Ontario.

Let’s get one thing straight. I love learning, and that makes me feel pretentious sometimes.

I’m fairly sure I have Academic Attention Deficit Disorder. I’m writing this editorial while expounding a paper on Eve’s Dream Sequence in Paradise Lost, tallying word counts for articles, editing articles, reading Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams (Parts I and II), listening to Christmas music, studying for an exam, and texting my sister.

For all the conversation over stadium venue location and tax-payer contributions, one thing is still not entirely clear: is Hamilton going to see a new (or even renovated) sports stadium?

The answer? Yes.

On August 31, the Ti-Cats announced that an agreement had been reached regarding the construction of the Pan-Am stadium. The new stadium will replace the Ivor Wynne Stadium, home to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and will open in 2014. The Ivor Wynne Stadium will be closed in 2012 and demolished to make room for the new stadium.

The Eden Mills Writers Festival is surely a Canadian treasure.

This year’s festival, September 15-18, 2011, featured a wide range of Canadian authors and poets. As always, a literary festival is not just about the writers featured, but the contributions to the ongoing conversations surrounding Canadian identity.

Up and coming writers (Fringe Writers) included Joanne Prescott, Sean McCabe, Debbie Okun Hill and Julia Zarankin.

Sitting in an RA/HA kick-off meeting, we were asked to consider if we felt safe on Redeemer’s campus. While the question was imposed to evaluate Security’s effectiveness after a living room window had been smashed by two young men trying to break into a townhouse, it prompted a few questions in my mind about the implications of a secure campus.

What is Christian journalism? This is the question that we, The Crown, will be seeking to answer in the coming year.

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

I recently had the privilege of representing Redeemer and The Crown at the 73rd annual Canadian University Press conference (affectionately called NASH73), in Montreal, Quebec. While there, I discovered one important aspect about myself: I have forgotten what it is like to live as a Christian in the secular world.

This year I gave up television and movies for Lent. I know, television and movies are not exactly risen bread or meat, and no, they don’t fall into the food group of chocolate.

Another decade has come and gone. I feel old. It is a little funny to think that, as the new millennium rolled in, I was ten years old. And what was I doing? I was reading. When the year 2000 rolled in, I was reading Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat to my one year old cousin. I will admit it, I am a literary geek. Looking back over the last ten years, there are certain books that have stood out. Here’s my list.
