I grew up in a small Pentecostal church in the west end of Ottawa, and for fourteen years I had never heard of Lent until I began attending a Catholic high school. The idea of giving something up for it was new and irrelevant to me. I thought only Catholics participated in Lent, and since I am not Catholic, I saw no reason to participate.

On the evening of March 11th, about forty people in addition to Redeemer faculty attended the inauguration of mathematics professor Dr. Kevin N. Vander Meulen, who has taught at Redeemer since 1994, to the rank of full professor. The evening began with the faculty entering the auditorium in their academic regalia, accompanied by the playing of the piano. Dr. Jacob Ellens addressed the audience and opened in prayer, thanking God for Dr. Vander Meulen and his achievements, and also praying for current world suffering and need.

When I first saw the posters advertising that the Redeemer Pro-Life group was showing the movie Juno, I was really shocked. I saw the movie about a year ago, and the messages were not ones that I agree with as a Christian. For those who haven’t seen the movie, Juno follows the pregnancy of sixteen-year-old Juno, who got pregnant by her best friend. We watch her through the ups and downs of her pregnancy, including considering abortion, finding adoptive parents, and the birth.
