2011 was a devastating year for the Liberal Party of Canada. At the helm of the Liberal party was Michael Ignatieff, a brilliant academic, political theorist and author. While his qualifications were impressive, Ignatieff failed to gain the confidence of the Canadian voters as leader of the Liberal party. Ignatieff is undoubtedly a smart man who is passionate about Canada, but this failed to translate in his public addresses and in his ever important sound bites. The federal election results showed that the Liberal party won the fewest seats ever in party history.

There has scarce been a time in history where human rights have been more revered than in today's society. In the west individual rights are paramount. There is little that can trump one's rights. In Canada we have the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which entrenches our rights as citizens in law. Most of the West shares similar laws, ensuring its people are afforded freedom as a basic, foundational right.

After months of civil war, Libya officially marked its liberation on October 23 following the death of dictator Muammar Gaddafi. With joyous relief, the people of Libya celebrated in the streets; the conflict was finally over, the book seemingly closed on Libya's oppression. What could be marked as the end, though, may more rightly be noted as the start of a very arduous process for Libya. Their leader ousted, their people in upset, their country in disarray – where does Libya go from here?

Lovers of Apple Inc. technology fell into mourning on October 5 following the loss of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Having been the face of the popular Apple products for the better part of three decades as well as the CEO of Pixar Animation, Jobs himself became an icon in his own right, representing technological and artistic progress. Apple products ushered personal technology into reality; Pixar changed the face of animation forever. Steve Jobs was brilliant and will rightfully be remembered for his impressive accomplishments.

Monday, September 12th saw Redeemer “flipping the switch” on its newly installed rooftop solar panels.  The project, funded in part by the federal government’s program KIP (Knowledge in Infrastructure Program), is comprised of a 131kw photovoltaic solar power system with the engineering and installation being completed by ARISE Technologies Corporation of Waterloo. When engaged, the system will be able to generate up to 150,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, or about ten percent of Redeemer’s annual energy usage.

The contrast between wealth and poverty in Ghana is striking. The wealthy comfortably drive their recent-model, fully-loaded Toyota LandCruisers through the streets while filthy, impoverished children play on the curbs in open gutters full of sewage and garbage. While the difference in their material possessions is obvious, the greater difference lies in their spirits. Since we’ve arrived, we’ve found ourselves almost continuously showered with gifts from the villagers.

One of Ghana’s many beauties is its incredible coastline. I was thrilled to be able to spend a weekend in the coastal fishing village of Kokrobite shortly after my arrival in Ghana.

Ghana is a country of beats, heat, and hospitality. We arrived a couple of weeks ago and were hit by a wave of heat as we stepped from the plane and made our way down the stairs to the tarmac in the darkness of the African night. As we exited the terminal, many locals shouted “Akwaaba" to us, which we learned is the traditional Ghanian greeting of welcome.

In one week my hand luggage will be stowed, my seat will be in its upright position, my belt will be buckled, and my hands will be toying nervously with the emergency procedures brochure. The 747 will rumble and bounce down the runway, seconds later breaking through the clouds. Wheels up, adventure started, Ghana bound.

Without a doubt everyone is familiar with the recent Facebook trend whereby women were asked to change their statuses to reflect the colour of their bras, the claim being that this would “raise Breast Cancer Awareness”. Hmmm... I would argue that publicly declaring the colour of your undergarments not only fails to raise awareness but, in fact, detracts from the awareness of any cause. Modesty was thrown out the window in a primary school-esque diversion.
