“As the Father loved me,” Jesus said, “I also have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full” – John 15:9-11, NKJV.

Wait, did Jesus just say “that our joy may be full?” Is our joy full?

For the longest time I struggled to be awed by God's grace and Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. I mean, I knew it was an amazing sacrifice of love, but I had heard about it my whole life and the wonder of God’s forgiveness and love just began to wear off. I knew that, just like with everything else in the Christian life, we cannot work up the feelings within ourselves; so I would pray over and over, “God, help me to be awed by your grace! Open my eyes so I will truly grasp the magnitude of what you have done for me!”

Sunday, October 20, hosted the second Church in the Box event of this academic year. The theme for the Church in the Box services this year is the fruit of the spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), and this past Sunday event focused on the second fruit – joy. The message was given by Russ Irwin, a previous Psychology professor at Redeemer who was well-liked and admired by many in the Redeemer community.
