The Crown would like to extend a warm welcome to Redeemer’s first journalism professor, Casey Korstanje.  Casey comes to us from the Hamilton Spectator where he currently works as Senior Wire Editor for Canada and World news.  As the recipient of the B’nai Brith National Human Rights Award for Journalism, and with experience ranging from journalist to editor, he carries a unique perspective on the news-publishing world.

When I was younger, I read a lot of pioneer novels. I grew up on Sarah Plain and Tall and stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder. One of my favourite parts of these stories was their descriptions of winter.

Recently I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Bob Goudzwaard, Professor Emeritus of Economics and Social Philosophy at the Free University of Amsterdam and a former member of Dutch parliament. Dr. Goudzwaard just completed a month-long CLEAR lecture series entitled Philosophy, Christian Spirituality and Modern Society.

Your book is called “Hope in Troubled Times.” Do you really think that there is hope for this troubled time? Is there something that we can do?

On Sunday, September 26th, Student Senate held what was supposed to be a four-hour meeting. It turned into an eight-hour meeting that caused all the Senators not only to give up their entire day of rest but also to miss evening worship.

You belong here! You must have seen Redeemer’s new slogan around campus, welcoming all of us back. I have to admit I felt some excitement at someone acknowledging my place here. It feels good to belong, to have my right place.

Redeemer’s dedication to on-campus living was challenged this fall as an unanticipated increase in enrollment, particularly among first-years, made it necessary for administration to develop creative ways to house the many students wishing to live on campus. Administration was surprised as applications for on-campus housing continued to arrive well into the summer.

There’s something about the beautiful weather that we’ve been having lately that simply demands open windows and loud music. I was prompted to consider this the other day as I was driving around Brantford doing errands. The radio was cranked the loudest it’s been in months and I was enjoying the warm sunlight through the bent sunglasses I had dug out of the side door of my car.
