The Birds and the Bees win record deal

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Friday, November 13, Redeemer’s 2009 lip-synching air band competition welcomed six bands from all areas of the student body to exhibit well-rehearsed dances and actions mimed to popular songs. Performers leapt onto stage dressed in flashy, decade-appropriate costumes, occasionally glancing over longingly at the judges in hopes of receiving a placing score.

At the end of the evening, after careful consideration, the judges concluded that the final band, the Birds and the Bees performing “Evolution of Dating,” would be the recipient of the first place prize – a record deal. One of the participants in the competition, Sarah Vanderkooy, exclaims that “It was very funny, fun, and awesome! It was filled with very tasteful humour and I am definitely coming out again next year!”

The evening, hosted by the Swede Darren Hoogendoorn, began with a trivia game that required two female audience members to yodel when they knew the answer. Question after Swedish question was posed, accompanied by some intriguing noise that set a jovial mood. The fun was continued by the numerous famous critics dropping by to oversee the judging – the Godfather, Bill Cosby, and Christopher Walken were played by Matthew Weverink; Brittany Spears appeared through Melissa Koning; Donald Trump was played by Josh Vanderlinde; and Michael Jackson made and appearance through Kate Stringer. The characters comically critiqued the performers, providing them with helpful hints, constructive criticism, and gentle ribbing.
