Boarding (and skiing) Blue Mountain

Monday, March 15th, 2010

This past weekend, over twenty Redeemer students attended a snowboard trip to Blue Mountain planned by the Outdoors Club of Redeemer.  The Outdoors Club frequently plans interesting events from hiking to canoeing, but the yearly snowboarding trip has become a much-anticipated favourite for many people.

This trip, probably the last snowboard trip of the year, took place over a period of three days with two nights spent at the condo and a full day of snowboarding or skiing.  Mike Koning eloquently explains that “We managed to have a lot of fun despite the less-than-ideal conditions.  Everyone crammed into a luxurious condo in Blue Mountain Village near the bottom of the hill.  The four hot tubs, the heated pool, and the malfunctioning sauna provided an excellent relaxing conclusion to a tiring and fulfilling day of exercise.”  The weather was a little rainy, but warm and the hills were empty.  There was no wait between finishing a run and returning to the top of a mountain.  When the rare occurrence arose where tiredness overcame the ambitious boarders and skiers, it was possible to relax and view the big air competition from the bottom of the hill.  Stephen Bowler reports that it was a “nice comfortable setting.  It was cool to be able to watch the Big Air Competition while going up the chairlift.”  The total cost was surprisingly a mere $45 total.  Lift tickets for the day alone cost more than that!

Everybody returned home feeling contented, tired, and with a few new friends.  No one received any serious injuries and it was a great weekend filled with encouragement. During the nights, many people took advantage of ping-pong, listened to music, visited local establishments, became acquainted with new friends, and consumed a lot of hot chocolate.  Brent Schinkel emphasizes that he “had a spectacular time!”
