Editorial: A brief response to CAUT
Quite simply, I am offended by the narrow-mindedness displayed by CAUT: namely, their attempts to degrade my school, my professors, and my faith through their investigation into academic freedom at Redeemer University College and other similar Christian universities. I find that my academic freedom is challenged particularly when I am faced with the type of prejudice currently displayed by CAUT—prejudice that assumes my faith is something academia must free me from. I challenge CAUT to move past its inaccurate assumptions and actually engage in a discussion as they have been invited.
I offer support and appreciation to our professors. You have my respect, and I am thankful for your wisdom and guidance. To assume that Redeemer screens their professors solely on their religiosity is absurd. Not only are my professors excellent teachers, but they are also deeply committed to Christ. I appreciate the faith that shines through your dedication to your research and to your students. Further, Dr. Krygsman’s leadership in his decision to stand up to this investigation is inspiring. My prayers are with you as you work to bring this to some sort of resolution.
And finally, I also want to thank the greater academic community, of which Redeemer is a part, for their outpouring of support. The petition signed by members of both the public and private sectors of academia, as well as the many newspaper articles and editorials that note the various ambiguities and paradoxes of these ridiculous accusations provide continuing evidence of Redeemer’s credibility, and I, as a student, greatly appreciate it.
As a journalist, I must believe that these words will have weight. But I also know that Redeemer’s continued success and influence is the strongest testimony to the academic freedom promoted by Redeemer’s faculty. We do not learn in a religious bubble—one applicable only to our own particular circles. If we put ourselves under a bushel, our light will go out. Rather, we as students and faculty alike need to continue to take what we learn here and bring it into the greater world. Redeemer, let your light shine.
