First Years: We Have Arrived!

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Cars and people fill the parking lot. Box upon box is carried into houses. Parents cry; siblings explore; and some students discover they were not as “tough” as they had predicted when they tear up while saying goodbye to their parents while other students cannot wait for their family to leave! Amidst all of this chaos, noise, and excitement, I can already see that Redeemer is going to have an impact on my life. First years, we have arrived!

First introductions can be the most awkward part of a relationship; however, with my house of girls I instantly felt at home. This comfort was a result of meeting such crazy, outgoing, and caring people who, I am proud to say, are my dorm 29 family.

Launch activities began as we formed teams and were instructed to make a scene with a prop, a movie, and two words. Our minds raced to be as creative as they could be. Unfortunately, time passed too fast and I made a fool of myself in front of the entire gymnasium! Still, I had a lot of fun doing it.

Our team celebrated with freezies when our team arrived at the final station of the hunt for our launch leaders first. But, somehow, we still managed to find ourselves in last place and realized that to win the Launch Olympics we really needed to prepare.

The day had finally arrived. Colourful team members surrounded us with dress-up and spirit. To be honest, I felt as though our team was not as colourful as we should have been.

Then, it all began. People screamed and cheered for teammates as they raced to victory, opponents taunted and teased one another; energy was high, and determination strong.

After the activities were completed, my team had won half of the games and we were more than ready to dominate a game of mud-tug-of-war.

Of course, within minutes, we won and the rush that came with such a victory was indescribable.

Though I am sure we did not win the Olympics, I can say I gained a lot more than a trophy. Throughout the week, I have met many amazing people—all from different walks of life and different denominations of Christianity. It is inspiring to be surrounded by such courageous and loving people at Redeemer University College. From the moment I arrived to the moment I am at now-balancing homework with msn-I have felt welcomed and joyous. So far I may have only been here for one week, but I have discovered that I already have a new name for Redeemer: home.

Congratulations to Becky Connel, who is the Winner of the First Year Article Contest!
