A Mid-Year Success

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Under the careful instruction of guest director Lezlie Wade, a nominee for the Pauline McGibbon award, over forty Redeemer students and faculty presented Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Redeemer Theatre department worked for three months to present the Japanese rendition of the comedy that opened on November 24th and ran until November 28th.

The play tells the tale of two pairs of lovers who elope through a dense bamboo forest filled with mystical fairies.  A bitter conflict in the realm of the fairies results in the human relationships being humorously altered.  It was an amusing twist on the centuries old play.

The Theatre department has not performed a Shakespeare play for several years and Sharon Klassen, a theatre professor, explains, “Giving students the chance to try to act the language is an important part of their education as actors.”  Erin Faul, who played one of the fairies, reflects, “The many hours of rehearsal on Wednesday nights and Saturdays were always draining.  However, it was a fantastical production to be a part of, both on and offstage:  the costume changes, the make-up and hair crew, the many laughs and tears in the green room, crazy dance warm-ups, and of course being on stage, playing.” An immense amount of time and effort were put into these productions and it resulted in a high quality play that packed the theatre with each of its performances.
