Ongoing Investigation Into Former Redeemer Professor

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

On Monday, August 25, students and staff were shocked to read in The Hamilton Spectator that former part-time biology instructor Dr. Onzuka had been arrested on charges of sexual assault. Onzuka, who did not receive a contract to instruct at Redeemer for 2009-10, has also been accused of stalking a former McMaster classmate, the Spectator reports. According to John Burman’s article, police are investigating reports of sexual assault that date as far back as 1994.

In an email sent on August 27, Academic Vice-President Jacob Ellens urged students with any information to contact Detective Helena Russell at 905. 540. 5544. Ellens wrote, “I invite you to pray for any alleged victims who may have been assaulted, for Detective Russell, who is leading the investigation, as well as for Dr. Onzuka.”

Dean of students Fred Schat reacted earlier this week. “To the best of our knowledge we have not heard of any students that have been sexually harassed. My concern also is for Dr Onzuka that hopefully he can receive help … if these charges are valid ... so that he can get his career back on track.”
