Update on $2.9 Million Federal Government Investment
As many of you probably heard over the summer, Redeemer received a $2,947,302 grant from the federal government’s Knowledge and Infrastructure Program, marking Redeemer’s first investment from the federal government. Redeemer plans to invest the money into twenty-five projects that fall into four categories: Research and Development, Sustainability, Safety and Security, and Student Services. Specifically, the federal grant has given Redeemer the ability to invest in its academic building, performing much needed maintenance upgrades and improvements without significant limitations. Currently, the Science Department’s improvements are nearing completion including new floors, storage cabinets, fume hoods, and additional storage space. Lab instructor Ron van der Heiden is thrilled with the renovations, stating that the department “looks more professional”, making it a more quality, organized environment for student learning. A few of the more exciting elements of the project include the installation of solar panels on the academic building’s roof, a campus weather station, and the new food vendor, Refresh. The application process, spearheaded by the Vice President of Advancement Bill vanStaalduinen, led to the federal grant accepting Redeemer’s proposal for it’s desired projects.
Alfred Mazereeuw, who as Director of Physical Plant and Security has been heavily involved in the project, was preparing an update to provide to Redeemer’s Board of Governors for their September meeting.
